Pri's Prize for Ignorance and Idiocy

Possibly my last blog for 2011, with this year's PPII (obscure acronyms is a hallmark of my trade but this is easily worked out)  awarded to our Ambassador in Washington shooting from the hip in response to a question he must have been asked about the latest International Crisis Group report on Sri Lanka on Women's Insecurity in the North and East. Please check his speech out here, and if you think the PPII is undeserved, please let me know!  Only just began reading the report, which comes with the biases that we have learned to associate with the International Crisis Group, but talks about the highly patriarchal nature of Tamil and Muslim societies, and the insecurities generated for women by, not just the military, but also by  the LTTE, and by society in general.   In the face of the Amabassador's vehement denials of the prevalence of sexual harrassment and rape in the Paradise Isle  an article in yesterday's Daily Mirror quotes Police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana saying that they have detected an increase in statutory rape cases this year when compared with previous years. Statutory Rape incidentally is when a person engages in sex with consent or without consent of an underage person.  The newspaper has SP Rohana going on to say "These underage girls should be taught about the consequences of their behaviour".   Maybe the PPII should be shared!

  1. On the assumption that the best ambassadors are located in the most powerful countries, one has to worry about the pool available in Sri Lanka ! The man (US ambassador) is a complete idiot. One cannot expect the donor countries to push the issue since some of them are just as guilty towards their own citizens and/or have their own agendas for being in Sri Lanka. The UN and Ban Ki Moon on the other hand is only good at blowing hot air. They are all scared that Sri Lanka will cozy up to China, Russia or Iran if they push too hard or cut off the IMF (the biggest enabler) spigot.
As regrds the Daily Mirror article: The figures indicate that 1400 of 1637 reported cases have been solved. That's only REPORTED cases. This is a mind-boggling figure by any standards. Obviously these rapes are either being committed by the security forces with no other sexual outlet, or by men who are exploiting the absence of males in households following the war. (Incidentally it is interesting that in the comments section, Kenny G got the biggest number of positive hits for suggesting that porn sites be brought back! I hate to break the news that porn sites only encourages rape!).
A comments: If the Daily Mirror edits their comments -they certainly need to hire some editors !
A question: Why does Pri mean by "the biases we have learned to associate with the ICG??

Let's hope Sri Lanka one day adheres to its lofty Bhuddist princples ! It is up to the Sangha to put the corrupt politician's feet to the fire.
